This is a park where a portion of the Meriken Wharf, a 60-meter quay damaged in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, has been preserved and maintained as it was. The preserved quay wall has collapsed, showing the horror of the earthquake and the extent of the damage.
The park displays models, videos, and photo panels showing the damage and restoration process of the Port of Kobe. Through these displays, visitors can see and feel up close and personal the enormity of the earthquake.
This park is part of Meriken Park at the Port of Kobe, which was severely damaged in the January 17, 1995 earthquake in southern Hyogo Prefecture (the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake). In order to learn from the earthquake and to convey to future generations the importance of the port and the cooperation of many people from Japan and abroad in the restoration and reconstruction of the port, a portion of the quay wall (approximately 60 meters) of Meriken Park has been preserved as it was at the time of the earthquake.
Near this park is a rest area and exhibition space. In the exhibition space, photo panels documenting the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and materials on the damage are on display.
